Sue Katherine Philips Prock

Sue Katherine Phillips Prock, age 84, passed away at home in Richmond, Texas, holding hands with her children on Sunday, May 21, 2023 Sue was born in Cleburne, Texas, to Otto and Katherine Milburn Phillips. She attended Cleburne High School and then took a BS in education from Baylor University, where she met her husband, Charles “Buz” Moody Prock. Sue and Buz had two children, Philip and Marcy, and after trying out Austin, Midland, and Dallas, settled in Fort Stockton, where Sue lived until 2017, when she moved to Richmond to live near Marcy. Sue had a rich career in elementary education, beginning by teaching second grade in Bellmead, Texas, near Waco. Upon moving to Fort Stockton, Sue taught fifth grade for 13 years, became a single mom and raised two children while earning a master’s degree in elementary education from Sul Ross State University. Sue went on to earn a certification in Learning Disabilities and became a diagnostician. Sue finished her education career in 2002. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for key women educators. Despite being a life-long member of the Baptist Church, she joined the Presbyterian Church in Fort Stockton in the 1990s where she was active until her move to Richmond. Sue had diverse interests in a great many things. She belonged to the Fort Stockton Historical Commission for many years. She was introduced to the art of hunting arrowheads by her beloved mother-in-law, Margaret Moody Prock, which sparked an avocation in archaeology. She was very active with the Iraan Archaeological Society, a division of the Texas Archaeological Society. She went on numerous archaeological digs in Texas and New Mexico, assisted in researching history of the Chihuahua Trail, and was honored to have assisted with the excavation of French explorer La Salle’s ship, La Belle, which sunk in the year 1686 off the Texas coast in Matagorda Bay. The ship La Belle is on display at the Bob Bullock Museum of Texas in Austin. Sue took a particular interest in the Fort Stockton Community Theater and took an active fundraising role in the organization’s fledgling years and then in their expansion into a modern facility. Sue was a traveler. She was most happy when she had a plane, train, or boat ticket in her hand. She was able to complete a bucket list wish of visiting all 50 states when she cruised Hawaii in 2016. Some of her favorite trips were to Mexico, Alaska, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, yet she loved a drive to Big Bend country. Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Katherine Milburn and Otto Phillips. She is survived by her son, Philip Prock and husband, Brian Welch; her loving daughter, Marcy Prock; niece, Shelly Burns and husband, John; nephew, Shane Griggs and wife, Lynde; nephew, Brian Calvert and wife, Cheryl; and dear Milburn family cousins, Nancy, Joan, Kay, and many others. There will be a chapel service at White's Chapel of Memories in Weatherford, Texas on Saturday, June 24 at 10:00 am, with an inurnment following at East Greenwood Cemetery.
