T.J. Phillips, Jr., of Poolville, passed peacefully from this world in Weatherford, Texas on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at the age of 82. He will be greatly missed. The family will hold a visitation at the Poolville Tabernacle on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m., also at Poolville Tabernacle. The family returned to their home in Poolville while T.J., Jr. was an infant. A sister, Stella Louise Phillips, was born on May 29, 1947 in Poolville. T.J. was graduated from Poolville High School in 1956 and briefly attended Texas Tech University. T.J. married the love of his life, Janice Ann Malone, in Weatherford on June 5, 1959, and T.J.’s uncle, William Poole Phillips, officiated the ceremony. T.J. and Janice were married for 61 years. Three sons were born to T.J. and Janice: T.J. “Tony” Phillips, III, Roger Wayne Phillips, and Todd Alan Phillips. In his early adult years, T.J. worked as a welder. A lifelong entrepreneur, he started the ‘Blue Moon’ drive-in café in Bridgeport when he was 19. He and Janice owned and operated the Poolville General Store, White’s Auto in Weatherford, and T.J. Phillips Motor Company in Jacksboro. He was a lifelong rancher and farmer. He ran a cow-calf operation raising Herefords and Black Angus on ‘The Wolf Ranch’, family land that was recognized in 2005 by the Texas Department of Agriculture for having been in the family and in continuous agricultural production for 100 years or more. He raised truck crops and operated greenhouses. T.J. was quite a unique character and was a skilled story-teller, often recounting his life’s many wonderful adventures. He is preceded in death by his older brother, John Phillips; his sister, Louise Phillips Hewett; and parents, T.J. Phillips, Sr. and Oleta Mae Phillips. T.J. is survived by wife, Janice Phillips of Poolville; sons, Tony Phillips and his wife, Jennifer, of Lipan, Roger Phillips of Weatherford, and Todd Phillips of Poolville; grandchildren, Tate, Ty, Tripp, Trew, Delaney and Townes; sister-in-law, Paula Soultaire and her husband, Dana; brothers-in-law, Larry Wells and Gary Wells; nieces, Amy Wells, Paula Ann Malone, and Marlena Soultaire; nephews, David Hewett, Rusty Hewett, William Wells, and Jeffrey Soultaire. The family would like to thank Sheila Ferreira for the loving, wonderful care that she has provided to T.J. and Janice the last several years.
