Stephen Murphy “Steve” Newberry, 79, passed away on January 31, 2024 in Weatherford Steve was born January 9, 1945 in Mineral Wells; son of Lawrence and Ruby Gladys (Owens) Newberry. In his younger years, he was a truck driver. During that time he acquired the “CB Handle of Red.” This would go on to stick as a nickname for many throughout his life. Steve worked at Antelope Oil & Tool for nearly 15 years before his retirement. Over the years, he would acquire many friends; and could often be found during happy hour visiting with his friends at El Paseo in Mineral Wells. He was a simple man, and in true Texas fashion he had an affinity for all things western. He enjoyed spending time in his recliner and watching re-runs of the Rifleman, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza. While he had many joys in life, his first love was his family. He loved to spend time talking with his sons and daughter-in-law. One of the things that the family will remember most fondly about Steve is his great sense of humor. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Timothy Newberry; brothers, Mike Newberry and Kenneth Newberry; and one sister, Jean Polston, who passed away after Steve’s passing but prior to the publication of this obituary. Survivors include his children, Stephen Murphy Newberry, Jr., Vicky Hill, Eric Newberry (Cori), and Jason “Opie” Newberry (Jeannie); many grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Jacqueline Phelps. At Steve’s request, no services are planned at this time.
