Sonja Emma Shilanski

Sonja Emma Shilanski (Rieger), formerly of Niagara Falls, NY, and more recently of Springtown, TX, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026 at the age of 94, surrounded by her loving family. A woman of beauty, faith, strength, and grace, she lived a remarkably full life.

Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, on January 31, 1932, Sonja met the love of her life, her beloved husband John Shilanski, while he was serving as a US soldier. After living in Pennsylvania and various parts of New York, she eventually settled with her family in North Tonawanda, NY, and then Niagara Falls, NY.

Sonja was predeceased by her husband, John Shilanski, and her daughter, Linda Lowmaster. 

She is survived by her son-in-law, Kenneth Lowmaster; granddaughters, Tammy Prep and Trina Lowmaster; great-grandsons, Stephen Lowmaster(Shreya), Eric Prep (Brandi), and Jonathan Prep; and great-great-grandsons, Adam and Adrian Lowmaster.

As the matriarch of her family, Sonja touched many lives, providing the love, support, and encouragement that shaped who we are today. She was happiest when spending time with her grandchildren, reading, tending to her flowers, and maintaining the most beautiful lawn on the block. She will be remembered for her dedication, strong will, and unwavering determination. This spirit of service was evident in her community, where she volunteered for over 25 years at the Wheatfield Senior Center and Elderwood at Wheatfield.

Per Sonja's request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Freedom Palliative Hospice Care, 9001 Airport Frwy., Suite 570, North Richland Hills, TX 76180; Attn: Jon Glover.
