Mary Evelyn Patterson Smeal, 88, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, was swirled up to heaven in a whirlwind and into the arms of Jesus after a lengthy illness on Monday, July 4, 2022.
Funeral Service: 2 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2022 at White’s Mineral Wells Chapel, 101 N. E. 4th Ave., Mineral Wells.
Visitation: 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday prior to the service at White’s Funeral Home.
Interment: Memory Gardens of the Valley, 5600 Mineral Wells Hwy., Weatherford.
Mary was born on February 7, 1934 in Ackerly, daughter of Thomas Carr and Dora Ella (Mahaffey) Patterson. She grew up in the Big Spring area and resided in Big Spring, Lubbock and later in Mineral Wells. Mary retired from Texas Packaging in Mineral Wells after 43 years of dedicated service.
Mary loved Jesus with all of her heart. She was a devoted Christian and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mineral Wells. In later years, she was a member of Message of the Cross Church in Weatherford, where her son was Pastor. Mary and her husband, Ed, enjoyed serving the Lord.
She was devoted in helping with the homeless ministry with her Pastor and son, Clen and his wife, Linda, for many years. Mary was an exceptional wife and a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She was vibrant and fearless and she loved life. Mary was an exceptional cook and was a loving host. She always made everyone feel welcome in her home. Mary was everyone’s “Granny”.
She enjoyed bowling, working in her yard, fishing, and camping. Mary loved gardening and canning with her sisters. But most of all, she loved spending time with her precious family.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas C. and Dora Ella Patterson; brothers, T. C. Patterson, Doyle Patterson, Henry “Chicken” Patterson, and Bill Patterson; sisters, Sally Shadden, and Carlene Farr; and son, Clen Spoon.
She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Edward “Ed” Smeal of Mineral Wells; daughter, Pam Stricklin and husband, Lloyd, of Weatherford; daughter-in-law, Linda Spoon of Weatherford; one sister, Barber Bledsoe and husband, Benny, of Lubbock; grandchildren, Chad Dillard, Angie Zuniga, Amanda Spoon, and Bryan Dow; great-grandchildren, Katelin, Brooke, Bradley, Rusch, Vanessa, Taylor, Sidney, and Tate; numerous great great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of loving friends.
