Memorials: In lieu of flowers, she wanted donations to be made to First Christian Church--Kerrville for flood recovery (FirstChristianKerrville.org) or to Texas Retired Teachers Foundation (trtf.org).
She'd love for folks to wear color to her funeral, especially TCU purple and WHS Kangaroo blue.
She was a proud graduate of Weatherford High School, Class of 1947, after which she attended Weatherford College. It was there she would meet her future husband, Wayne Davee, who was there on the GI Bill after serving in World War II. They married in 1949. Mable went on to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Christian University, followed by further graduate studies at Texas Women’s University.
Mable dedicated 34 years of her career to education, first as an elementary school teacher for Weatherford ISD. Well-known for her remarkable memory throughout her life, she not only remembered most of her students by name in later years, but could also recount the year she had them, the grade they were in, and even where they sat in her classroom. This deep commitment to her students continued as she transitioned into the role of educational diagnostician. The second half of her career was spent evaluating children for special education, working across all of Parker County. During her career, Mable was an active participant in several educational associations. She was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association and became a Life Member of the Texas Parent Teacher Association, then moved into another chapter of her life when she retired. The importance of legislation affecting retired educators took her to the Parker County Retired Teachers Association and she also became a Life Member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association. In 2012, she was honored to receive the Weatherford ISD Distinguished Service Award.
Her dedication and community involvement extended beyond the classroom. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a 50-year member of the Pythian Sisters, and a 50-year member of Alpha Delta Kappa Educators Sorority. Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) served as the foundation of Mable’s religious faith for almost 85 years and she, in return, served the church in almost every capacity—as a choir member, Sunday School teacher, committee member, deacon, and the first female Elder in the church.
It didn’t take long being with her or visiting with her to know that she was listening. She was interested in who you were, where you were from, who your family was, and, at that point, could probably tell you things about YOUR family that even YOU didn’t know. She fiercely supported her grandsons, Harris and Hunter, in all their endeavors, taking great interest in their many activities and great pride in their accomplishments. Mable always loved working in her flower beds and gardens, seemed to have 10 green thumbs, and could resurrect dying plants back to life. She was an avid crocheter and knitter, creating potholders and hot pads in college colors for her grandkids. And when it came to Texas, Parker County, and Weatherford history, Mable could spend the day, regaling listeners with stories from the past. As it’s often said, every family has its own storyteller, the one who is the memory keeper, responsible for passing down the family history. In the McDavid family, that person was Mable.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ollie and Vida (Browning) McDavid; her birth mother, Annie (Heidrich) McDavid; her husband of 72 years, Wayne Davee; and her sister, Peggy Ann Burnett.
Mable is survived by her daughter, Janet Davee and her wife, Jeannie Cook; son, David Davee and wife, Paula; grandsons, Harris Davee and wife, Courtney, and Hunter Davee and fiancée, Catherine Conrad; sister, Polly Ryan; nieces, Dianna Patterson, and Laura Davies; cousins, Ruthie Jones, Sammie Stanley, and Verline Spann; along with many extended family members, friends, church family, and former students. She is also survived by her loving caregivers: Amanda Robledo who tended to Mable and Wayne for almost 10 years, and Josefina Costilla.
Mable’s life was one of service, love, commitment, and connection, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her. She will be missed deeply but will live on in the memories of those she inspired and nurtured throughout her remarkable journey.
