Leslie Wayne Smart

Leslie Wayne Smart passed away suddenly Thursday, February 22, 2018 at his home in Mitchell, Georgia. Leslie Wayne Smart was born December 1, 1941 in Fort Worth to Leslie Earl and Margaret Frances Probes Smart. He attended first grade at Arlington Heights Elementary. At age 7, his family moved to Weatherford, where he attended South Weatherford Elementary, Weatherford Junior High, and Weatherford High School and graduated in 1960. He entered the U. S. Army for 3 years and spent 33 months in Germany.  Upon discharge, he returned to this area where he worked in management at Fort Wolters PX, Sears, and Kips Big Boy restaurant.  About 1975, he moved to Lexington, Kentucky where he began a long association with the Carpenter brothers, founders of Bluegrass Treated Wood, Inc. At the time of his death, he was working with Pulliam Lumber in Mitchell, Georgia as the general manager of Bluegrass Treated Wood in which he had served in that capacity for many years.In addition to being a gun enthusiast, he enjoyed riding motorcycles, mountain climbing, road bicycling, and kayaking.  He was a lifelong admirer of all genres of music and played the Native American flute, orchestra flute, and guitar. He was taught his first guitar chords by future Rock and Roll star and friend, Wesley (Mac) Curtis.He was always looking for a new adventure and never gave up his quest to learn new skills.Wayne is survived by a loving family; daughter, Leslie Michelle Smart and husband, Brian Ely, of Perryville, Kentucky; son, Rick Smart and wife, Kim, of Crowley; brothers, Virgil Glenn Smart and wife, Mary, of Weatherford,  Robert Alexander Smart and wife, Paula, of Weatherford, and David Morris Smart and wife, Donna, of Longview; grandchildren, Ashley Smart Finch and husband, Brad, Austin Smart, and Brianna Ely; great-grandchildren, Conner and Carter Finch; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and aunts, Bobbye Lou Smart McBride and Judy Smart. A memorial was held in Thomson, Georgia on February 25, 2018 with thanks and appreciation to Scott and Glenda Lamb, Lynn Pulliam and the Pulliam Lumber and Bluegrass Treated Wood family.A visitation will be held at White’s Funeral Home Chapel in Weatherford on Saturday, March 3 from 10:00am to 12:00pm with graveside service to follow at Curtis Cemetery at 1:00pm.
