Lawrence Frank Guyton, 79, passed away Monday, January 15, 2024. Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024 at First Methodist Church of Weatherford, 300 S. Main Street., Weatherford. Lawrence “Larry” Frank Guyton grew up in the West Texas oil fields with his parents, Imagene and Barton Guyton and graduated with honors from Andrews High School where he excelled in science. Always creative and innovative, he and a friend designed and built a rocket. After their science teacher encouraged them, Larry wrote to White Sands in New Mexico, requesting that they let them launch it. White Sands engineers said, ’’Thanks, but no thanks.” Athletic and fearless, Larry excelled in football, but he declined several college scholarship offers. He stayed in shape, running, becoming an 8th degree black belt in American Karate, and earned several belts in Judo. He also boxed and rode bicycles. Larry was a life long learner attending Texas Tech. Majoring in Electrical Engineering, the Vietnam War interrupted his degree plan. He served in the Army National Guard and eventually graduated from Tarleton State University with a degree in Physics and Mathematics. He married Jorene Lisenbee, and they were blessed by two children, Wendy and Derek. Larry loved being a dad and participated in Indian Princesses, attended ballet performances, band concerts, soccer games, also camped, fished and completed the Philmont New Mexico Scout two-week Hike with Derek’s scout troop. There were many other camping trips to Big Bend and various states. He loved going to the movies — a fun family time. Moving to California after getting transferred, Larry’s entrepreneurial spirit took off, and he went into the pizza business, continuing with the Italian Inn in Ft. Worth. Always liking new challenges, he moved into the telecom industry where he continued having adventures and making new friends around the world. Even in high school, Larry was known for his reading of encyclopedias with his having read all of the World Books and Brittanica’s for pure enjoyment. With his creative and informed mind he easily wrote poetry daily and short stories. Loving astronomy, Larry could be found looking through his telescopes many nights—attending at least one Star Party a year. He made sure that his family saw Haley’s Comet at 2:00 a.m. one winter night. Always a friend to animals, Larry treated them with kindness and was quick to rescue any animal in trouble. Larry was a loving and giving husband, dad, granddad and friend. He claimed his salvation in Jesus Christ late in life, and we rejoice to know he is living the abundant life in Heaven with the LORD for eternity. He is survived by his wife, Jorene Guyton, daughter, Wendy Kirkland, son, Derek Guyton (Jen) and beloved grandchildren, Morgan Kirkland and Caroline Kirkland and sisters, Brenda Wilke (Bill), Debbie Cyr (Paul), brother John Sterle and nephews and nieces.
