Moughon and Hazel Marie Moughon.  A celebrated student and athlete at Weatherford High, John played basketball, ran track, and led the Kangaroo football team as the starting quarterback for the 1946-47 seasons.  John was honored as the outstanding player in games against Bonham, Arlington, Quanah, and Mineral Wells.  Handsome and good natured, he was voted Senior Class Favorite in the Weatherford “Melon Vine” yearbook.  Upon graduating from Weatherford High School in 1948, John received a scholarship from Texas Tech University where he played quarterback for the Red Raiders for 4 years.  Following his time at Tech, John served his country in Korea in the 1st Marine Division.  He continued to serve for six more years in the Marine Reserves and retired as a Captain.Remembered by many as “Coach Moe,” John made his coaching debut in Mount Pleasant while earning his master’s degree from East Texas University.  He coached in Mount Pleasant for seven years, his team earning a berth in the state semi-finals in 1958.  John then returned to his home town where he coached football, basketball, and created the baseball program at Weatherford High School.  After coaching in Weatherford for 6 years, John went into private business with his family, where he remained until he retired in 1995. John married his high school sweetheart on August 9th, 1952.  She was the love of his life.  Through 65 years of marriage, John made Judy smile and laugh every day that they spent together.  He was a wonderful and loving husband to his “Mama Bear.”  John and Judy’s example of humble service and generosity towards one another has been an inspiration to those who have known them. In retirement, John filled his days with fishing, yardwork, and watching his grandchildren carry on his legacy in sports.  He enjoyed watching birds and squirrels through his window, and John had a special love for dogs.  An avid reader, John and his wife, Judy, completed crossword puzzles and the daily jumble together for years. In 2010, John and Judy were honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the Weatherford Independent School District for their service as public school educators.  John was inducted into the Weatherford High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.  He was a charter member of the Weatherford High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church for 56 years. John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Judy Moughon; daughters, Leslie Evans, and Linda McCasland and husband, Roger; grandchildren, Jeremy McCasland, Grant McCasland and wife, CeCe, Josh McCasland and wife, Melissa, Sara Graves and husband, Chance, Steffi Entzminger and husband, Kyle, Katie Woodley and husband, Luke, and Abbey Evans; great-grandchildren, Cooper McCasland, Tatum McCasland, Amaris McCasland, Jett McCasland, Jersey McCasland, Beckett McCasland, Ryder Graves, River Graves, Liam Entzminger (arriving shortly); and several cousins.
