Jerry D. Shawn, of Boyd, TX, peacefully passed from this world, at the age of 87, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
Funeral service and interment: Graveside, 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at the Peebles Family Cemetery, south of Boyd, TX. No visitation is being scheduled.
Jerry was born close to the end of the Great Depression, on September 2, 1938, in Balsora, TX, to Harold and Cora (Glover) Shawn. Jerry was baptized on July 6, 2001, at the East Mound Church of Christ, in Bridgeport, TX.
Balsora was where he spent his childhood years, growing up next to the café and general store which his parents owned and operated for many years. He later moved to Bridgeport, where he spent most of his adult life. In 2013, he ended up in Boyd America where he spent his final yours with his wife and son, living life in the country, next door to their daughter and son-in-law.
In January 1970, Jerry married Connie Smith, at the home of her parents, in Bridgeport, TX. Through good times and bad, they stuck together through all the ups and downs life throws at you, and they had just celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary a few short months ago. Together, they raised two children, Sindy (Shawn) Peebles and Sandy “Bud” Shawn, who both grew up in Bridgeport.
Jerry spent years driving a truck and running heavy equipment, mostly in the oilfield, until health problems cut his career short. He grew up with great examples of hard-working parents. He in turn worked hard to provide for his family, until he was no longer able to do so. He even followed in his parent’s footsteps, owning and operating Longhorn BBQ in Bridgeport, TX in the early 1980’s. He spent his later years drinking coffee with his buddies at the DQ, and various other places throughout the county; going to auctions and yard sales to find “treasures”; tinkering with various home projects; mowing the lawn; spending time with family; and loving his dogs! He had a quick wit and always gave everyone he cared about a hard time! He was" onery" as they come and stubborn as could be, but he also had a huge heart, and a soft spot for dogs.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Harold Jr, Harley and Larry Shawn; brother-in-law Larry Smith; son-in-law Dale Peebles; his loved and cherished dogs Candy and Nippy.
He is survived by his loving wife Connie; daughter, Sindy Peebles and fiancé Doug Scroggins, along with his children and grandchildren; son, Sandy “Bud” Shawn; sisters, Doris Rodriquez and husband Fidel, Peggy Inskeep and husband Wayne; brother-in-law Ronnie Smith and wife Lindsey; great-grandchildren, Brylan Peebles and wife Emma, Dylan Peebles; great-great-granddaughter Rynlee Joy Peebles; his beloved dog Dally aka “Baby Girl”, and his other 4-legged buddies, Rider and Athena; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Pallbearers include Sandy “Bud” Shawn, Brylan Peebles, Dylan Peebles (honorary), Jason Smith, Doug Scroggins, Chevy Scroggins, David McDonald and Jason Alvey.
“Take me home if I die. When I’m gone, don’t you cry. Find some shade right beside a live oak tree. Sing those old songs of faith, “I’ll Fly Away” and “Amazing Grace”. But you’ll find comfort knowing that my soul found peace, and you can bury me beneath the deep blue skies of Texas.”
