Jeffrey was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 1, 1940. He was raised by his parents, William W. McCandless and Doris J. (Toboldt) McCandless. He grew up playing sports, singing and enjoyed being a big brother to his sister, Melinda. After high school and one year of college he enlisted in the Army where he spent 2 ½ years in Germany. While in Germany he got married and after finishing his time in the service returned to the United States. Jeff embarked on a twenty plus year career in accounting and marketing with Mobil. The job took him from Philadelphia to Connecticut to Millis, Massachusetts where he raised three wonderful children and completed his accounting degree at Northeastern University. He started a second career in New Hampshire with American Express Financial Advisors as both a Personal Financial Advisor and a Registered Principal. He stayed with the firm until his retirement in 2004.
Foremost in his daily life was his love of the outdoors and his faith. Jeff camped with his family while the children were growing up. He completed the Boston Marathon in 1984. During his retirement years he and Ruth enjoyed hiking and RV traveling, visiting most of the National Parks. A lifelong Methodist, his church family and Questors Sunday School class sustained him, along with his participation in the church choir as a bass. Family was precious to Jeff.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 24 years; his sister, Melinda and husband, Bruce Bergen; his son, Kurt and wife, Katherine McCandless; daughters, Kim and husband, Will Hiles, and Karin and husband, Dave Butts; sister-in-law, Janice Power. Eleven grandchildren will cherish their memories of him, Laura McCandless, Kate McCandless, Jacob Wheeler, Ellery Wheeler, Nate Hiles, Nicholas Chuang, Natalie Chuang, Simon Chuang, Erin Butts, Megan Butts, and Mackenzie Butts; as well as nephews, Chris Bergen, and Robert Power; and niece, Wendy Vaughan. He is also survived by two young great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Beckham Minniweather.
