Jackie was born September 5, 1939, to Clarence and Ester Carpenter of Post, Texas. He graduated from Post High School in 1957 and was named to the All-Southwest Plains Football Dream Team. Jackie loved football, especially his Post Antelopes, and enjoyed sharing memories of his alma mater as well as attending Post football games. He extended his love of football to his three sons, attending their practices and all their football games. Jackie joined the Army after high school and served for two years until the death of his father, when he returned to Post to take care of the family cotton farm. A short time later, Jackie’s sister, Eddy, set him up on a date with her roommate, Peggy Dalton. Jackie and Peggy married in 1962 and continued to farm in Post. After several years of farming, the couple moved to Peggy’s hometown of Azle, Texas. Jackie was active in Azle city government and various community organizations. He served many years on the Azle City Council and was Mayor Pro Tem for several of those years. He was a 50-year member of the Azle Masonic Lodge 601, a charter member of the Azle Optimist Club, and one of only two distinguished presidents in Azle Optimist Club’s history. Jackie also owned and operated the family business, Rural Gas Supply. Being a farm boy from Post, Texas, he was not afraid of hard work. Jackie often spent long hours delivering propane to his customers, some winter days working 20 hours straight to make sure his customers were warm and had heat. He passed on the value of hard work to his sons, encouraging them when they were young to “make a hand” before they went to haul hay for a family friend or help a local craftsman. Jackie loved his family and friends dearly and enjoyed spending time with them all. Jackie was preceded in death by brothers, Gene Carpenter, Don Carpenter; and sister, Melba Mahon. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy; his four children and their spouses, John and wife, Kim, Jim and wife, Lynne, Tim and wife, Kathy, Christy and husband, John Ross of Springtown; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Eddy Lockaby. Jackie will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
