George Louis Allen, 82, passed away peacefully in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2025 at East Greenwood Cemetery, Weatherford.
Louis was born on January 8, 1943, in Weatherford, Texas, to Dr. Platt L. Allen and Madelon Jo Kincannon Allen. He attended Weatherford High School and graduated from St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin in 1961. He earned the first of three degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in Business, majoring in Finance, and was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
If you know Kay, you know one of Louis’s greatest accomplishments was marrying Wanda Karen Bodiford—Kay—on March 28, 1967, in Weatherford, Texas. Together, they raised three daughters, of whom he was immensely proud.
Over the next decade, Louis held several positions in research and institutional sales while pursuing his MBA from North Texas State University, which he completed in 1976. He then joined Leggett & Platt in Carthage, Missouri—a NYSE-listed company and former client—where he rose to the position of Treasurer and Vice President.
Drawn back to the city of his college years, Louis and Kay returned to Austin, Texas, to raise their family and enjoy Texas Longhorns sports. Always a lifelong learner, he became a Certified Public Accountant in 1982 and earned his Ph.D. in Accounting from North Texas State University in 1985. His dissertation led to meaningful improvements in accounting practices. Louis spent the remainder of his career teaching financial accounting at Southwest Texas University (now Texas State University) and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, while also publishing scholarly articles in accounting journals.
Outside the classroom, Louis was an avid sports enthusiast. He especially enjoyed following his daughters' athletic pursuits and cheering for Longhorn football, basketball, and baseball. One of his fondest memories was pitching a no-hitter in his youth—a story he loved to tell even in recent years.
After an early retirement, Louis and Kay traveled extensively across the U.S. and Europe, visiting many notable golf courses. He also enjoyed playing bridge and golf with friends at Alto Lakes Country Club in Alto, New Mexico where they had a second home.
In retirement, Louis remained deeply involved in his community. He served as a volunteer firefighter in the Tierra Linda community near Kerrville, Texas, and used his accounting expertise to assist with tax preparation for AARP and to help maintain sound financial records for the St. Barnabus Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Platt L. Allen and Madelon Jo Kincannon Allen; and his brother, Platt L. Allen, Jr.
Louis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kay; his daughters, Karen Calame and husband, Paul of Leander, Kerri Ann Chambless and husband, John of Austin, and Susan Standard and husband, Jim of Spicewood; and his cherished grandchildren, Johnny Chambless, Abigail Chambless, and Platt Standard.
