Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Thompson

Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Thompson died at home in Weatherford, Texas on a sunny spring day, May 1, 2017.  She was 99 years old.  A funeral service for her will be held at Grace First Presbyterian Church, 606 Mockingbird Lane in Weatherford on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at 1:30 p.m.    She will be buried with Tommy at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.  A visitation will be held at White’s Funeral Home, 130 Houston Ave. in Weatherford on Tuesday, May 3, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. Betty, the third child of Alma and James Peirce, was born at her parent’s home in Delphi, Indiana on August 16, 1917.  At age 8, her father James died.  Her mother Alma raised Betty, her two sisters, Ruth and Kathryn, and brother James on a farm near Delphi.   Alma, a hardy Midwestern woman, provided for her four children during the Great Depression by growing her own food, chopping fire wood, and raising farm animals, in a home without electricity, until a New Deal program electrified it.  Despite the hardships of the Depression, Betty, Ruth, Kathryn and James all graduated from college.   Betty graduated from Lafayette Business College.  She worked as a secretary in Indiana until the outbreak of World War II, when she joined the war effort as a secretary for the U.S. Army Air Corp at Stout Field in Indianapolis.  At a U.S.O. show featuring legendary entertainer Bob Hope, Betty met her future husband, Halbert A. (Tommy) Thompson, an Army Air Corp pilot from Azle, Texas.  They were married in 1943. After the war, Betty was a stay at home mother for her sons James, Jerry and Mark, then later a legal and medical secretary in Weatherford. She also assisted Tommy in jewelry stores he owned in Granbury and Weatherford.   Betty was a sweet, quiet woman, who loved cooking, quilting, and bridge. Betty’s three children, James, Jerry, and Mark Thompson, all survive her.  She is also survived by her brother, James Peirce; her grandchildren, Christine Cherrett and her husband, Bradford Mathis, Toby Thompson and his wife, Jennifer, Michael Thompson and his wife, Jennifer; her great-grandchildren Garrett and Hadden Thompson; and beloved nieces and nephews in Texas, Michigan and California.Services are in care of White's Funeral Home, Weatherford.
