He passed away Saturday, May 8, 2021 at home surrounded by his family. Service: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at White’s Azle Chapel. Visitation: 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at White’s Azle Funeral Home. Everybody is invited to wear green and white to the Celebration of Life. Don grew up in Childress and attended Childress High School where he was Pitcher for the Bobcats. He graduated from Childress High School in 1960. He went on to attend North Texas State University where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Kinesiology and History in 1964. Don then earned his Master Degree in Secondary Education in 1965. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and as a Graduate Student Don was in charge of the Intermural Sports Program for the University. Don met Kathy Newby on a blind date in the Fall of 1962. They married in January of 1964. Don’s first teaching position was at Pampa Junior High School where he taught History and Coached Football and baseball from 1965 to 1971. In 1972 Don was employed at Marlin Middle School as Assistant Principal, History teacher and coached All eighth grade boys sports. In the fall of 1973, he became the Principle at Azle Junior High School where he served for the next 33 years. Don and Kathy became members of Azle Christian Church in 1973. He served as a Deacon and then later an Elder. He sat on numerous committees including the Pastoral Selection Committee. Don retired from education in 2006. Don and Kathy loved to travel. They went to 21 states and 32 countries upon retirement. Some of their favorite places include the Australian Out Back, Red Square in Russia, Riding the train through the Swiss Alps, the Christmas Markets in Germany and the Roman Coliseum. Don loved his Mean Green!! He has been a football season ticket holder for 50 years and a member of the Mean Green Club since it began almost 40 years ago. Don received numerous awards for his fund-raising and recruiting efforts for the football program. In 2014 Don became a member of the prestigious Alumni group, the Golden Eagles. You will have a hard time finding a bigger Mean Green fan that Don Hufstelder. He was a fan in good times and in bad times. Win or lose he and his family stayed for the entire game supporting the green and white. One of Don’s favorite Mean Green traditions was the playing of his Alma Mater as the players stood in front of the band Talons Raised high. Immediately following the school song the Green Brigade will play their signature song from the Movie Carousel “You Will Never Walk Alone”. No matter where Don was he would make sure he was where he could listen. Don is survived by his wife, of 57 years, Kathy Hufstedler; daughter, Terri Hufstedler Cott; grandson, Christopher Chester Cott; sister-in-law, Brenda Purser; brother-in-law Vernon Newby (Glenda); many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
