Growing up, Charles loved living in and around Tampa and Sulphur Springs, Florida. He has shared many stories of his life in Florida. He has shared many times how he gave his heart to Christ at the age of 9 in a tent revival. He loved his family and his friends. In 1944, he entered Bible Training School (later becoming Lee University) and always loved to talk about his time and his experiences at “BTS”. While there, also wanting to serve his country, Charles signed up for the draft. He told us they classified him “4D” since he was attending Bible college to become a minister, so he was not called for military service.
While attending Bible school, he and another young evangelist minister came to Texas (hitchhiking part of the way!) to preach some revivals. During his 3rd revival in Texas, he met Betty Jean Bullman and her family. He said she played the guitar and the piano, and sang like an angel. Several months later, they were married. They evangelized together for a period of time, then they pastored a church in Olney, Texas. They returned to Florida where he pastored a church in Samoset, Florida for five years. They came back to Texas and pastored the following Church of God congregations: White Settlement (now Lakeside) Church of God in Fort Worth, Mount Vernon, Groves, Iowa Park, Brownfield, San Antonio, Weatherford, Paris, and Graham.
Charles served for eighty years as a minister in the Church of God. He loved being in church! He served on the Texas State Council for 24 years, and as a District Overseer for 30 years. He served as the state Evangelism Director for 4 years.
Every place he lived, he made an enormous impact on many lives, and people loved him and his Christian testimony and life. He was known for his compassion, kindness, and love for God and people.
