Charles "Michael" Swagerty

Weatherford - Charles Michael Swagerty, 75, husband, father and loving grandfather, passed away Friday, December 22, 2023 in Fort Worth. A Private Family Service will be held at a later date. Michael was born December 19, 1948 in Saint Louis, Missouri, son of Charles L. and Mildred Swagerty. He moved to Azle in the first grade and graduated from Azle High School. Following graduation, in 1967, he entered the United States Marine Corps. Michael proudly and honorably served his country during the Vietnam War with the 3/11, achieving the rank of Sargent until he was shot and wounded on December 16, 1968. He continued to serve until his time in the service came to an end on March 24, 1969. During his service he was awarded a Purple Heart Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 star, Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, and the Bronze Star Medal with a Combat “V” for Valor. Michael was very proud of his service to this country. He was a truly an American hero. Michael spent his work life as a police officer with Southwest Fort Worth Police Department, then Joshua Police Department, and then Venus Police Department, retiring as a Sargent. He owned a karate studio in Southwest Fort Worth and was a Master Martial Artist and Karate Instructor for many years. Following his retirement, Michael moved to the Weatherford area, where he lived until his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles L. and Mildred Swagerty; his son, John C. Swagerty in December of 2021; and his siblings. He is survived by his devoted wife, Susan Swagerty; his children; and his beloved grandchildren.
