Graveside Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday May 23, 2023 at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas. Mel was born January 31, 1933 in Oklahoma, daughter of John Phillip and Jessie Eva (Williams) Wallis. She met the love of her life, Jim Hollis Barker, and they were married on July 21, 1950. They would go on to spend nearly 54 happy years together before Jim’s passing in 2004. Mel was a woman of extreme faith. She and her beloved husband served in the church for many years. She was a Pastor’s wife, Sunday School teacher, and counselor. While she had many titles, her most treasured role was mother and grandmother. She raised her family in a Godly way and made sure that the love of God, and family, was instilled in her children and grandchildren. She loved to fish, was an avid reader and enjoyed doing puzzles. While she was a woman of integrity, she still loved to win when she played games. She also saw the beauty in God’s creation and loved to watch the hummingbirds even up to the end of her earthly life. She is preceded in death by her parents; and her beloved husband, Jim Barker. Survivors include her children, Skyler Barker (Janis), Bonnie Stevens (Mark), Reda Barker, and Shelly Lowrance (Steve); 8 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; brothers, Dean Wallace, and Calvin Wallis; sister, Mary Jenkins; many nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family members and friends.
