Anne Newberry Bergman, 95, loving mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 4, 2020. She is now reunited with her husband, Robert David Bergman, and in the presence of her Savior. Anne was born March 12, 1925, in Weatherford, Texas, and was the daughter of William Douglas Newberry, Sr., and Mary Hunter Newberry. She grew up in Weatherford and was always proud of her hometown. Anne received her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Trinity University in 1946. She met the love of her life on a blind date while he was attending the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, when their roommates set them up. It was love at first sight and only grew stronger with time, a model of love and devotion for all the family and friends who have come behind them. Their 70 years of marriage was filled with fun, family, sailing, wine and food dinners, and great holiday memories. They spent many weekends on their Catalina 22 sailboat, sailing Possum Kingdom, Texoma, Eagle Mountain Lake, and even the islands off Florida and the Bahamas. The homemade wine they bottled with their friends in the Weatherford Wine and Food Society was a great memory, even if not so great for the taste buds. Anne was a tireless worker in her church, her community, and her great State of Texas. She was a member of All Saints Anglican (Episcopal) Church in Weatherford for almost 70 years, a founding member of the Friends of the Weatherford Public Library, Chairman of the 1986 Weatherford Public Library Gala, served as a City Councilwoman, and served in many other volunteer positions almost too numerous to mention. Anne’s passion was politics, specifically Republican politics, even before it was fashionable in Texas. Beginning in 1952 Anne was a delegate to the State Republican Convention, and over the years held numerous positions in Republican gubernatorial, congressional and presidential campaigns, including those of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush for president, Bill Clements for governor, and Anna Mowry for Congress. Possibly the thing Anne was most proud of, with the exception of her family, was her election in 1977 as President of Texas Republican Women. When her church founded the Mi Familia Orphanage in Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico, Anne was a tireless fundraiser for that mission that took children living in the streets and hills of that area and gave them a home. One of her most prized possessions was the quilt she received with the handprints of the children on it. Anne’s can-do spirit and tirelessness are an inspiration to all who knew her. There is no doubt that when Anne crossed over and was met by her Savior, she was able to repeat the words of 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Anne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, her grandson James Wilson “Jimmy” Bozzell Jr., and her son-in-law, James Wilson “Jim” Bozell, Sr. Survivors include her daughter Elizabeth Bozzell; her son John David Bergman and wife Nancy of Midland, Texas; and her son William Robert Bergman and wife Melissa of Midland. Grandchildren are Catherine Bozzell Smith and husband Nick of Joshua, Texas, Carrie Cashman of Weatherford, Drew Bergman and wife Mary Katherine, Grant Bergman, Spencer Bergman, Brett Bergman, Ellen Bergman Irby and husband Trevor, Anne Bergman, Randi Halterman and husband Chris of Midland, and Riley Murphy of Odessa; great-grandchildren, Noah Smith, Abby Smith, Halee Cashman, and Weston Halterman. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 pm on Friday, November 13, 2020 at White’s Funeral Home, 130 Houston Avenue, Weatherford, Texas 76086. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday at All Saints Anglican Church, 125 S. Waco St. in Weatherford. Memorials: Donations in Anne’s memory may be made to the All Saints Anglican Memorial Fund, also located at 125 S. Waco St. in Weatherford.
