After graduating from high school, he moved to Fort Worth and began assembling bombers at Consolidated, now known as Lockheed. About a month after he had established a steady job there, he returned to his hometown to marry Vonda Smith on Christmas Day, 1943, and they began a home in Fort Worth. He ultimately spent a four decade career as an aircraft mechanic. Together he and Vonda made a home for their three children in the Fort Worth/Aledo area. He was ordained as a deacon in 1953 and served as deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of White Settlement, Aledo and Willow Park. He took pride in his craftsmanship and skill as a mechanic and enjoyed fabricating and fixing almost anything. He got satisfaction from working with his hands and often sang hymns as he worked around the house. Stuart was preceded in death by his first wife of 55 years, Vonda Lee Smith Turner, who passed in 1998. He married Bobby Farrar Pennington in 2001 and she preceded him in death in 2011.
