Dr. James Donovan McCall of San Antonio, formally of Mineral Wells, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2007.He was born in Weatherford, Texas on August 7, 1913, to Jim L. and Alice Donovan McCall. He was raised in Weatherford, and attended the University of Texas in Austin, graduating in 1934. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, Texas, and did his internship at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, New York. He returned to Texas, and began to practice medicine in Mineral Wells. He met and married Rose Wood Heyck, who remained the love of his life for the next sixty-odd years. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in North Africa and Italy during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received. He returned to Mineral Wells, and continued to practice medicine until his retirement. He served as Chief of Staff of Nazareth Hospital and as President of the Mineral Wells Independent School District Board of Trustees. He served as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Wells, where he was a faithful member of the choir for many years. He was an accomplished piano, organ and accordion player. During his life, he entertained many people with his sense of humor and his musical talents. He also loved to fish. He and his daughter (and later, several "fishing buddies" spent many happy hours at various Palo Pinto County fishing venues. He and Rose remained in Mineral Wells until June of 2000, when for health reasons, they moved to San Antonio.He is survived by his wife, Rose McCall of San Antonio; his son, Mike and wife, Linda of Austin; his daughter, Jan and son David, both of San Antonio; his grandson, David of Austin; and his granddaughter, Michele and fiancé' David Thompson of Madison, Wisconsin.A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 300 Northwest 4th Avenue, Mineral Wells, on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at 3:00 p.m.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or the Salvation Army.
