Halbert Allison "Tommy" Thompson, 91, passed away Friday, February 24, 2012 after a short illness.Funeral: 10:00 a.m., Wednesday at Grace First Presbyterian Church in Weatherford. Interment: DFW National Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at White's Funeral Home.Tommy was born March 9, 1920 in Azle the son of Zora and Grover Thompson. He graduated from Azle High School, where he was an All-State basketball player. Tommy attended Weatherford Jr. College and Texas Wesleyan University before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II. During World War II, he flew cargo planes in Asia over the Himalayan Mountains "The Hump" to supply the Chinese Army in its fight against the Japanese. Tommy ultimately attained the rank of Captain in the Air Corp. While stationed at Stout Field in Indiana, Tommy met his future wife, Elizabeth Ann Peirce, at a Bob Hope Show. They married within several months of that meeting, and remained together for 69 years. During the Korean War, Tommy served as a bomber pilot in the Strategic Air Command. After he was honorably discharged from the Air Corp, Tommy worked at Weatherford Oil Tool as a pilot and district manager. He later became a watchmaker and jeweler, and owned two jewelry stores in Weatherford and Granbury until his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Thompson; sons, James, Jerry and Mark Thompson; daughters-in-law, Beverly Thompson and Cathy Thompson; grandsons, Toby Thompson and wife, Jennifer and Michael Thompson; granddaughter, Christine Cherrett; and great-grandsons, Garrett and Hadden Thompson.
