Irene Agnes Costello Jacobsen

Irene Agnes Costello Jacobsen, devoted wife of 63 years, beloved mother of six, proud grandmother of ten and great-grandmother to one, passed away at home on February 11, 2012. A small rosary service will be held at St. Stephen's Chapel, 110 S. Main in Weatherford on Friday at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Main St./Good N.E.W.S., 2004 W. Timberlake #103, Azle, TX 76020. A native of Brooklyn, NY, born on Feb. 19, 1928, to Helen and Arthur Costello. As a child she shared the task of walking a blind woman to and from work with one of her brothers. She also became a counselor at a summer camp for blind and partially-sighted children. Part of her duties were to teach them to swim and give nature study hikes. Learning to dance at age two, and appearing on the stage at the Academy of Music and other NY showplaces, was a life-long love affair. Her abilities included tap, toe and ballet. At a benefit performance at a local church she broke her toe and ended the dreams of a career in the Arts. When her youngest child started school full-time, Irene went to work for the Long Island Press newspaper for four years. She became a secretary/bookkeeper for Red Ball Van Lines for the next twenty years until she retired and the family moved to Springtown. When her husband, Ed, joined the Loyal Order of Moose, she also joined and eventually was elevated to the rank of Senior Regent, a highly regarded position in the order. They visited nursing homes, childrens hospitals, worked telethons and brought much joy with their hand-made gifts and goodies. The need to volunteer was always strong within, instilled by her mother "to always help wherever you can." With daughters Joann and Ellen, and granddaughter Sara Harwood, they worked several years at the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History. Meals on Wheels was another project she worked on with daughter Ellen Harwood. For several years, Ellen, Irene, Karen and Joann and their mom worked to bring happiness to the residents of the Battered Women's Shelter in Ft. Worth. They made sure each woman received Christmas gifts of needed supplies and personal items. She was voted "Senior Mrs. Springtown" in 2008 and served for two years. Her talent in the contest was her paintings, one of which was displayed at Lincoln Center in NY.Irene was preceded in death by two sisters; four brothers; daughter, Janet; grandchildren, Sara Harwood and Christopher Alcamo. She is survived by her loving husband, Ed Jacobsen of Springtown, daughters, Ellen & husband, Paul Harwood of Springtown, Irene & husband, Dean Betancourt of Ft. Worth, Karen & husband, Jon Goodwin of Arlington, Joann Lykins of Haslet; son, Ed Jacobsen & wife, Linda of Lake Carmel, N.Y.; grandchildren, Brian and David Betancourt, Matthew, Greg, Russell, Andrew and Katelyn Jacobsen and Trino Vasquez; and great-grandchild Sophia Alcamo.
