MARY ELLEN ROBERSON

Mary Ellen Roberson was born in Oklahoma City, OK on May 9, 1926. Mary Ellen grew up in Springtown, Texas where she attended school and graduated from Springtown High School. She attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas now known as Texas Woman's University and majored in home economics. Mary Ellen married Anes Roberson in 1946 and together they began a successful dairy business with her father, Eli Hart. Anes and Mary Ellen spent 20 years in the west Texas town of Andrews before returning to the Springtown farm in 1973. During this period of their lives, Mary Ellen was a Cub Scout den mother, designed and made twirling costumes for her daughter, and was a paper agent for the Midland Reporter Telegram. After returning to the farm, Mary Ellen worked for Springtown ISD as a substitute teacher and later taught students in the migrant program. Upon retirement she and her husband, spent many hours volunteering their services at the Springtown Senior Citizen's Center, VFW, the Legend's Museum, First United Methodist Church, and the community. Mary Ellen served as president of many of the organizations in which she participated. Using down-home humor and a bit of gossip, Mary Ellen wrote the popular Senior Scene column for the Springtown Epigraph for several years. She was named Women of the Year in recognition of her energetic spirit and volunteerism.At the Methodist church, Mary Ellen was known to many as "Granny." She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She was well-known for her cooking - she attended and cooked for the youth mission trip in Louisiana, coordinated the annual Lord's Acre turkey and dressing meal, cooked dinner for the Wednesday night services where is was known for her biscuit dessert and chicken spaghetti, and wrote the history section for the Quilting Club Cookbook. She served on the Administrative Council for more than 30 years, helped with Vacation Bible School, worked on the Neighbor to Neighbors Angel Tree project, and organized the church archives on display in the church vestibule. She was recognized for her contributions by being named United Methodist Women Member of the Year and Lay Member of the Year. Mary Ellen Roberson led an active and full life as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by four children, Aaron Roberson and wife Pixie of Albuquerque, NM; Ford Roberson and wife Catherine of Springtown; Andrea Hungerford and husband Rick of Springtown; Kerby Roberson of Springtown; seven grandchildren; and, seven great-grandchildren.Services for Mary Ellen Roberson will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8 at White's Funeral Home Chapel in Springtown. Visitation was from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 at the funeral home. Memorial: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church at North Main and Third St., Springtown, TX in memory of Mary Ellen Roberson.
