He attended school in Reno and helped his father on the family farm in his early years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army as a medical corpsman. He received a medical discharge in 1943 prior to his unit being deployed to duty in Europe. After leaving the Army, Mr. Springfield worked for Swift and Company in Fort Worth for twenty-nine years until the plant closed in 1971. He then returned to that occupation he had learned from his father: raising Parker County watermelons. Many of his melons were sold in front of his home on the Jacksboro Highway where loyal customers anticipated his appearance each summer. He married Madeline Jodell Welch on September 15, 1945. She was the daughter of Joe and Millie Sanderford Welch of the Springtown area. Family and church were of utmost importance in Mr. Springfield's life. He served the Lord faithfully at Springtown Church of Christ where he was a member for more than 60 years. His loving care and gentleness will be a cherished memory by all who knew him but especially by his family. His parents and a brother, Curtis Springfield, preceded him in death.
